Innovative forms of living and mobility

2018 to 2020

Increasing settlement pressure and land consumption, affordable housing and active land policy as well as a stronger coordination of settlement development and transport are essential problems and

Fields of action in the current and future spatial development of our country. The lack of solutions for affordable housing in central locations is increasingly leading to a process of displacement into the surrounding area, which in turn increases the problems of commuting and traffic. In addition, there are new social challenges, due to current trends such as a changing world of work, which requires more and more flexibility in the housing market and also in the mobility sector.

The WohnMOBIL project, funded by the BMK (City of Tomorrow program line), developed a systematic approach to solving these problems, especially in suburban and rural areas, in order to integrate innovative forms of housing and mobility into a forward-looking and sustainable settlement development and thus to counteract the problems.

The focus was on novel concepts such as transitory housing, a temporary form of housing, especially for newcomers, young families or workers with seasonally limited employment contracts.

So far, this form of housing is mainly found in urban areas, but would also meet the increasing demand in many rural communities as a space and cost-saving option.  The planning of demand-oriented multimodal mobility offers and infrastructures for different types of neighborhoods and settlements has created opportunities for the residents that are adapted to their living conditions and promote traffic-saving and sustainable mobility behavior. New forms of mobility such as sharing solutions, e-mobility and an adequate infrastructure to promote active mobility play a particularly important role here.

In cooperation with the project partners (RSA FG iSPACE-Projektlead, Energieinstitut Vorarlberg, Herry Consult, Architekt Schweizer and Marktgemeinde St. Johann in Tirol) a WohnMOBIL kit was developed, consisting of a handbook and index cards with the individual measures concerning housing, additional housing offers, mobility offers and mobility infrastructures. This kit was tested and further developed together with experts and LOI partners from the test areas Feldkirch/Göfis and St. Johann in Tyrol.
