Research project develops innovative solutions for attractive living and economic areas

Research Studio iSPACE wins European follow-up project for Alpine living and economic area. AlpBC is not an extension of the alphabet but stands for “Alpine Building Culture – Holistic Planning Strategies for Sustainable Building and Settlement Development in the Alpine Space”. What sounds unwieldy is a great success of the Research Studios Austria Forschungsgesellschaft’s Research Studio iSPACE.

For a period of three years, partners from Germany, France, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland and Austria will model the Alpine region as an attractive living and economic area and include holistic planning approaches that link all levels of the Alpine living space – from municipal to transnational – in the analysis.

The analysis also addresses current challenges such as energy system transformation, climate change, land consumption and demographic development and how these can best be incorporated into planning.

The new project builds on the AlpHouse project funded by the European Union, which analysed resource-saving and sustainable construction measures and promoted training in traditional crafts and construction techniques.

In the new project, Research Studio iSPACE is expanding the energy certificate platform, among other things:

“With the expanded ID platform, not only is a purely building-specific energy analysis carried out, but relevant regional indicators are also used, such as infrastructure conditions such as schools, local suppliers and public transport.”

,says Dr. Thomas Prinz, project manager from Studio iSPACE.

The goal is,

“to reduce both energy and land consumption,” adds Thomas Prinz. The calculations and visualizations are made available to regional, urban and local planners and property developers for sustainable settlement development.
