The UGB Synergy Workshop provided insights into current green space research.

The Research Studio iSPACE was again represented with a booth at the 30th edition of the AGIT – Expo and Symposium for Applied Geoinformatics at the University of Salzburg and gave an insight into its research activities.

A thematic focus was on green space research. From the ongoing research project Urban Green Belts, which is funded by Interreg Central Europe, two technical presentations and a Synergy Workshop organised by RSA iSPACE took place on 6 July 2018, where scientists and other experts exchanged views on current research in the field of open space planning and evaluation.

In the Urban Green Belts project 10 institutions from 7 Central European countries are developing innovative methods and tools for green space management in the fields of geoinformatics, citizen participation and political governance. RSA iSPACE leads the geoinformatics working group.

Günter Gruber presented the project in general and its pilot activities in the city of Salzburg and its southern surroundings. Indicators and planning bases are being developed to identify ecologically valuable green corridors and to secure high-quality leisure and recreation areas in the vicinity of residential areas. Other interesting presentations dealt with the analysis of urban parks from a social and climatic point of view, methods for green space enhancement, urban trees as suppliers of ecosystem services and the optimal determination of natural compensation areas. Anna Kovács-Györi, PhD student at the Department of Geoinformatics Z_GIS at the University of Salzburg, presented her studies on the use of Twitter data to derive typical profiles of urban park users using London as an example.

For RSA iSPACE it was a good opportunity to get suggestions for their own project work, to optimize it and to network with regard to future cooperation in this area. The feedback from the participants was very positive and the concluding discussion revealed numerous points of contact.

Personal discussions at the stand also led to valuable contacts to South Tyrol, the Universities of Padua and Venice and the IÖR in Dresden, among others, and served to broaden the research impact of RSA iSPACE. A photo quiz on the allocation of green spaces on an aerial photograph, which was also used at the district festival Lehen Grillt on July 7, relaxed the discussions.
