Improving music education through digital intelligence

International conference on 23.01. in St. Gilgen marks the beginning of the cooperation between the University Mozarteum Salzburg and Research Studios Austria Forschungsgesellschaft

The kick-off conference “Interactive Music Technologies” on Thursday, 23.01.2020 at the Hotel Billroth in St. Gilgen am Wolfgangsee is the start of a new research partnership. Here you can find the complete program (PDF, 16 pages) and here the update of the schedule from 21.01.2020.

The conference has three main focuses: First, the application of data science and information retrieval in musicology; second, new ways of interacting with intelligent musical systems and in multimedia performance art; and third, the convergence of music and movement science (kinesiology) – especially in “Aware Systems” for the better detection and analysis of human movement sequences.

From pervasive computing to automatic music analysis

Specialists from eight EU countries are expected to attend with lectures and multimedia presentations:

  • The pervasive computing pioneer Alois Ferscha (Johannes Kepler University Linz and RSA FG, Linz/Vienna),
  • the expert for Aware Systems Benedikt Gollan (Research Studio Pervasive Computing Applications, RSA FG. Linz/Vienna),
  • the data scientist and open data pioneer Petr Knoth (Research Studio Data Science, RSA FG, Vienna and Open University, UK),
  • the expert for interdisciplinary performance art Helmi Vent (former University Mozarteum Salzburg),
  • the information retrieval expert Peter Knees (TU Vienna),
  • the block chain specialist Sandra Vengadasalam (Max Planck Digital Labs, Germany),
  • the physicist and composer Maria Mannone (Universita di Palermo, Italy)
  • the interactivity and multisensory researcher Stefania Serafin (Aalborg University, Denmark),
  • the innovator and founder of the MTF – Music Tech Fest Michela Magas (Industry Commons Foundation, Stockholm, Sweden)
  • the HCI and Machine Learning expert Sergi Jordà (University of Pompeu Fabra, Spain),
  • the musicologist and music psychologist Hauke Egermann (University of York, UK) and
  • the expert for Semantic Web representations and methods of automatic music analysis Tillman Weyde (City University of London, UK).

“Conference is a must for all musicologists”

“Outstanding speakers make this event a must for researchers in musicology and related subjects,” says Andrea Klambauer, the Salzburg State Councillor responsible for science.

“We want to tackle the challenge of digitization with competent partners in the field of digital technologies,” comments the Rector of the University Mozarteum Salzburg, Elisabeth Gutjahr, on the motivation of the Mozarteum and the beginning cooperation with the RSA FG.

“Our goal is to connect research networks in the field of digital music technologies and digital musical creativity in order to set up innovative research projects in Digital Intelligence & Music together from Salzburg”, says Peter A. Bruck, Managing Director of the RSA FG. “The focus is on scientific originality as well as potentials for added value.

Further information is available at https://musictec.researchstudio.at. Registrations are possible on this website or directly at katharina.weber@researchstudio.at. The conference will take place from 10:30 to about 19:00. The number of participants is limited for space reasons.
