From 6-8 July, the International Symposium for Digital Earth uses digital technologies to look at societal problems and build bridges between policy, science and society.

As part of this event, the Data Intelligence Offensive is hosting a forum on 7 July to explore sustainable data economies, where Research Studio iSPACE from the Research Studios Austria will take part.

If all people lived as we Austrians do, we would need about 3.5 planets earth. They do not exist. However, a digital image of our planet can help make current problems measurable, understandable and solvable.

That is precisely what the International Symposium for Digital Earth (ISDE12) is about: It is one of the world’s largest and most important events examining current and societal problems with the help of a “digital earth”. The symposium builds bridges between politics, science and society in a unique way and also purposefully invites companies and NPOs.

From 6-8 July 2021, it will take place in Austria for the first time. Organizers of the event are the University of Salzburg and the Department of Geoinformatics – Z_GIS.

How can we combine data economy and sustainability?

As part of ISDE12, the Data Intelligence Offensive is hosting a forum for exchange and debate on the issues of the emerging data economy. There are already many technically feasible solutions, but the challenge for politics and business will be to implement them for the benefit of society, the environment and nature – as formulated in the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals – and in accordance with the strictest ethical and legal standards.

The topics of the forum include presentations of the Austrian data strategy, current projects on the intelligent use of data in geo informatics, lightning presentations of solutions offered by start-ups, discussions on the development of GIS data spaces, and various exchange formats with international experts and researchers.

The RSA FG is also represented and will give some presentations: The Research Studio iSPACE has been working on using insights from data science and geo informatics for socially relevant applications for a long time. At the forum, the studio will demonstrate how this transfer of concepts and data into implementation and application can be supported.

In keeping with the spirit of ISDE12, the DIO Forum is designed to build bridges between politics, science and society.
