Last week the 1st DoSSIER summer school was held after two years from the start of the project in the beautiful city of Olympiada in Greece. DoSSIER is an EU Horizon 2020 ITN/ETN project on Domain Specific Systems for Information Extraction and Retrieval which is being implemented via 15 Early Stage Researcher (ESR) projects led by 15 PhD students across 4 EU states in addition to the UK.

During the summer school there had been more than 10 lectures prepared by DoSSIER members and invited lecturers which covered a variety of scientific topics ranging from technical aspects of conducting research in IR to turning research into commercial products as well as legal bases and licensing of software outputs. To name a few lectures, we can refer to Norbert Fuhr’s talk on how to make sure that validity and reproducibility in IR experiments are observed. On the topic of Reproducible in IR, Andreas Rauber had centered his lecture on reproducibility, its importance and challenges for Evolving Document Corpora. On the topic of the link between industry and research there were also lectures such as designing enterprise search at Spinque. The lecturers present at the summer school are listed below as well.

Research Studios Austria is one of the project leaders in the DoSSIER project and hosts one of the projects being carried out by Yasin Ghafourian, our PhD student who is a member of the Data Science studio working on relevance models based on the knowledge gap for this project. Dr. Stefan Gindl, the director of the studio data science and Yasin Ghafourian were present at this DoSSIER summer school as the project members and participated in the lectures. Additionally Yasin also conducted a small proof of concept session by asking peers in the summer school to do a data collection test and giving him feedback for his research. This proof of concept will be used by Yasin to collect data on a larger scale leveraging the feedback and ideas he obtained during this session.
