GVID: Government ID

The sheer volume of data on the internet makes it difficult to maintain oversight and to clearly assign this data. This is why a long-term, unique identification option is all the more important. That is exactly what persistent identifiers (PID) do; they are already used for scientific publications, for example.

In the RSA FG’s research project “GVID”, the SDIS Studio in St. Pölten developed a system for generating such unique identification numbers (IDs) in cooperation with the Federal Chancellery (Bundeskanzleramt) and the federal data center (Bundesrechenzentrum). The aim of the project is to develop a system for issuing PIDs in public administration, so-called GoVernment IDs (GVID).
The unique thing about this project is that physical objects are also given a PID, for example tables or chairs. This significantly improves the transparency and traceability of digital and physical objects for public institutions.

The project enables public institutions in Austria to create and manage GVIDs efficiently. The GVID system offers the Federal Chancellery and the Federal Computing Center (Bundesrechenzentrum) a structured and secure method for assigning and managing PIDs.
For Studio SDIS, the implementation of the PID system provides a basis for improved and more transparent asset monitoring in projects, particularly in the context of Industry 5.0. The potential for more precise monitoring of assets leads to more efficient data management and process optimization in the field of production technology.
