RTI Initiative “Showcase Regions Energy”

15.11.2022|iSPACE Smart Settlement Systems EN, News, Uncategorized|

Austria's goal is to be climate neutral by 2040. To achieve this, the Climate and Energy Fund is promoting innovative technologies "Made in Austria". At the annual event of the RTI initiative "Vorzeigeregion Energie", which runs until 2025, an interim balance was drawn up on November 7, 2022 in Salzburg. This year, the stage belonged especially to those women who are active in the three showcase regions. Researchers from science and industry gave an insight into their work, which is also attracting attention beyond Austria through the global research alliance "Mission Innovation". Ingrid Schardinger from the Research Studio iSPACE was present at the event to exchange ideas with colleagues and to present projects. The RTI initiative "Showcase Energy Region" is growing from year to year and can already look back on experience from 80 projects. Model solutions for intelligent, safe and efficient energy and transport systems of the future are being developed and demonstrated. More than 200 partners are on board - from large research institutions to SMEs. Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler: "The energy transition needs pioneers. These are precisely what we find in the showcase regions. With domestic innovations we relieve the climate and create climate-friendly added value. Green jobs are created in the regions and Austria positions itself as a technological pioneer on the global market." The "Energy Showcase Region" initiative shows that an energy supply based on up to 100% renewable energies is feasible, economically viable and ecologically beneficial with innovations from Austria.

First DoSSIER Summer School

25.10.2022|Data Science|

Last week the 1st DoSSIER summer school was held after two years from the start of the project in the beautiful city of Olympiada in Greece. DoSSIER is an EU Horizon 2020 ITN/ETN project on Domain Specific Systems for Information Extraction and Retrieval which is being implemented via 15 Early Stage Researcher (ESR) projects led by 15 PhD students across 4 EU states in addition to the UK.   During the summer school there had been more than 10 lectures prepared by DoSSIER members and invited lecturers which covered a variety of scientific topics ranging from technical aspects of conducting research in IR to turning research into commercial products as well as legal bases and licensing of software outputs. To name a few lectures, we can refer to Norbert Fuhr’s talk on how to make sure that validity and reproducibility in IR experiments are observed. On the topic of Reproducible in IR, Andreas Rauber had centered his lecture on reproducibility, its importance and challenges for Evolving Document Corpora. On the topic of the link between industry and research there were also lectures such as designing enterprise search at Spinque. The lecturers present at the summer school are listed below as well.   Research Studios Austria is one of the project leaders in the DoSSIER project and hosts one of the projects being carried out by Yasin Ghafourian, our PhD student who is a member of the Data Science studio working on relevance models based on the knowledge gap for this project. Dr. Stefan Gindl, the director of the studio data [...]

Follow-Up Project “Aufzonierungsgebiete”

17.10.2022|iSPACE Smart Settlement Systems EN, News|

For several years, the city of Salzburg has consistently pursued a strategy of settlement development based on internal and subsequent densification in order to meet future housing needs. This is exactly where the project "Nachverdichtungsmonitor" from the studio iSPACE - Smart Settlement Systems started: in order to monitor the success of the goals and measures set, a standardized, transparent GIS evaluation tool was created in the form of the "Nachverdichtungsmonitor" which compares the development of the building stock with the maximum building densities according to the development plan. This post-densification monitoring has so far been implemented in a (roughly) 5-year cycle (2005 - 2014 - 2019). Based on the successful course of the "Nachverdichtungsmonitors" project, a GIS methodology is being developed to build on and supplement this in the follow-up project "Aufzonierungsgebiete", which identifies areas with a high potential for increasing building density (zoning up). The theoretical building potential of plots of land is evaluated on the basis of their geometry, the legal distance regulations and the building lines. For the current new preparation of the spatial development concept, this is an objectified basis for defining possible priority areas for future urban development in which rezoning can be a relevant urban planning element.
