The Research Studio Data Sciene at SIGIR 2022

29.07.2022|Data Science, Uncategorized|

Last week Yasin Ghafourian, one of our researchers at the Studio Data Science visited Madrid to participate in the 45th Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval (SIGIR 2022). SIGIR is one of the most reputable conferences in the field of information retrieval (IR) and focuses on all aspects of information storage, retrieval and dissemination, including research strategies, output schemes and system evaluations. After a two-year hiatus in holding conferences face-to-face, the in-person gathering and interchange is once again progressively returning to international societies. After earlier this year the European Conference on Information Retrieval was held hybrid, now SIGIR 2022 gathered IR researchers from all over the world to meet in person. Yasin is a PhD student in the European DoSSIER project and his project is entitled “Relevance Models based on the Knowledge Gap”. The main question in Yasin’s research concerns how search systems can help users to effectively overcome their knowledge gap as they are using the systems for learning purposes. With regard to Yasin’s research focus, there have been many relevant paper presentations and tutorials held during the SIGIR conference among which we can enumerate SIGIR’s tutorial on “IR Models, Evaluation and User Studies” in addition to papers investigating interactive and user-centered evaluation of search systems such as the paper entitled “A Study of Cross-Session Cross-Device Search Within an Academic Digital Library”. DoSSIER is an EU Horizon 2020 ITN/ETN project and it will elucidate, model, and address the different information needs of professional users. Research Studios Austria is one of the project participants and hosting [...]

Digitalization in Therapy and Care

19.07.2022|Pervasive Computing Applications EN, Uncategorized|

RSA FG supports tech2people in the development of digital, robotics-assisted therapy methods and actively researches new technologies in the field of AAL. The aging of Austria’s population presents the country with new challenges, such as a sharp increase in the need for care services. In addition, 150,000 people with transverse paralysis and 300,000 with multiple sclerosis live in the DACH region. Furthermore, there are about 250,000 stroke patients per year. Continuous advances in digitalization and assistive technology offer opportunities to support and strengthen both care and convalescence by means of physiotherapy in a fundamentally new way. The Research Studios Austria Forschungsgesellschaft (RSA FG) pursues several strategies to intervene here in a supportive manner. As a research partner of tech2people, the RSA FG supports the project “EDIT — Evolving Data Improved Therapy”, which was competitively selected and funded by the FFG. The goal of EDIT is to optimally support as many patients as possible through individualized forms of therapy. Modern robotics-based therapy devices offer enormous potential in this regard. Exoskeletons and other assistive therapy devices help to restore physical body functions faster and in a more targeted manner than conventional rehabilitation measures; however, the major innovation factor lies primarily in the combination of devices and their data and AI-driven data analysis and therapy development, the possibilities of which have hardly been used to date. therapy2people, a spin-off of tech2people, is building a therapy center in Vienna Aspern for this purpose, in which such robotic multi-device therapies will be made available to patients. Furthermore, the EDIT project [...]

The Salzburger Nachrichten on the project “Alm & Gesundheit”

12.07.2022|iSPACE Smart Settlement Systems EN|

Once again the Salzburger Nachrichten reports on a successful project from the Research Studio iSPACE: the print edition of July 6th, 2022 reports in detail about the effects of an Alm stay on the health of urban residents. In the project "Alm and Health", the Research Studio iSPACE, the Paracelsus Medical Private University (PMU) and the University of Salzburg (PLUS) are jointly investigating the effects of a stay on an Alm and its specific microbiome on the health of city dwellers. The overall objective of the project is to build up regional innovation competence for the sustainable valorization of alpine pastures as health-promoting living and recreational spaces. In addition, the project contributes to an increase in the attractiveness of Salzburg's natural and cultural area as a place to work, live and recreate, integrating science and innovation. The entire news articel can be read here. More information about the project: Alm & Gesundheit | Research Studios Austria FG
